It was a messy rescue attempt. Henry and Thornbury came at them from one side, Will and his privateers from the other. There was a moment when Juno realised she was still nearer to Dominic than any of them: he could easily reach out and kill her if he wished. For both of their sakes she was glad he did not.

There was a magical net, a cloud of enchanted sleep-steam, and a wild-eyed, blue-haired bosun wielding a knife. At one point, Thornbury stepped directly into Dominic’s path, and Juno felt her heart in her throat, knowing her friend’s happiness depended on that wretched spellcracker staying alive…

Dominic’s eyes met hers, briefly, and then he vanished into shadows as if he had never been there.

“What the hell kind of magic was that?” Thornbury demanded, throwing his arms up in frustration.

Juno didn’t care. They were all alive, and Henry was there in front of her, did she mention alive, catching her up in his arms…

Later, she would be infuriated that Dominic managed somehow to evade them all without answering any of the questions she had asked. The only ‘ghost’ she wanted to talk to, and he was nowhere to be found…

And, presumably, he still had designs to make her a widow for the second time.

She was going to have to do something about him.
